Announcement of Death

SUNDERLAND, John Lloyd — It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father and friend who passed away peacefully on October 13th at age 94. John was the devoted spouse to his late wife of 64 years, Frances Ann (Lindberg) Lombardi (2020); he will be missed by their seven children and spouses who were all present at home with him: Frank P. Jr. (“Chip”) & Catherine J., John J.; Francine M.; Steven L. & Colette; Michael W.& Marie A.; Darlene Walker-Lombardi& Timothy Pasetes; Amy S.and fiancéRobert Fufidio, III.regers;jaws grandchildren

Biography

He was born September 3, 1930 in Newport, RI which is one of the ironic twists for a man who enjoyed living life to its fullest and had a dry wit about him. He was educated in Cuba by the Christian Brothers, then through boarding at St. Joseph’s Newport and onto De La Salle Academy He pursued higher education in Civil Engineering from Wentworth Institute. John was a proud patriot who served in the Coast Guard from 1950 – 1953.

John Polis worked as a project manager of the years for Dimeo, Gilbane, Hart Construction and was Superintendent at Molony & Rubien Constriction.

Loved Ones

He is survived by his devoted wife of 69 years, Lucy and their seven children. Survived by his 14 grandchildren and proud great grandfather of he was also. He will be missed by all his family and friends, who are left to remember the laughs and love he shared with us.

He was the dear brother of James Sunderland, Jr. (Jackie), Joel and predeceased by his parents: James Sunderland Sr., Eileen (Nee Curran) Sunderland; son-in-law, Winston Cook; great-granddaughter Quinn Donnelly

Hobbies

Always one of many passions, John loved non-fiction in general and would read histories and memoirs with equal enthusiasm. A man with impulse and ability, he was also a shelterer who built his own house (and his boat), mirroring the sea-love. As well as his beloved boat, Mermaid Tavern or the hunting exploits of a younger John.

Memorial Services

The obituary on the platforms today for John’s life is to be celebrated and reflected in the hearts of loved ones. His passing was noted in local funeral services hosted by Miller Funeral Home obituary, as well as Henryhand Funeral Home obituary. A funeral service will take place at St. Barnabas Church, and the family of Bradfield O’Keefe obituary and Beasley Funeral Home obituary are making arrangements with hopes that John will be a good one for the community.
