Announcement of Death
Therman Eugene Murphree, 94, of Holly Pond, Alabama, went to be with the Lord on October 11, 2024, surrounded by his family. Therman was a devoted husband and loving father, known as a fantastic community leader to all who knew him. He left behind a legacy of love and selflessness.
Biography
Born on May 26, 1930, Therman was the second of nine children to Oncie and Dessie Murphree. Growing up on a farm, he was instilled with values of hard work, family dedication, and faith. A proud graduate of Holly Pond High School, Therman met his wife of 71 years, Jean Harris Murphree, during his studies.
In 1950, he joined the United States Air Force, serving during the Korean War in Burtonwood, England, and Del Rio, Texas, where Jean joined him after their marriage in 1953. After his honorable discharge, the couple returned to Cullman, Alabama, where Therman began his career and started planning their family.
Therman worked in the insurance industry, spending over 17 years at Liberty National, where he excelled as a top salesman and manager. He later formed his own independent insurance agency and became partners with Jean in Murphree’s Menswear.
Loved Ones
Therman’s commitment to service extended beyond his career. He ventured into politics, winning a seat on the Cullman City Council in 1976, and was elected mayor in 1988, where he tirelessly sought to improve the community. His civic involvement included active participation in the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, Civitan, and Kiwanis Club.
Most importantly, Therman cherished his family. Together with Jean, he lovingly raised their children, Nan Murphree Priest (Marlin), Dr. Steven T. Murphree (Alisa), and Chris M. Murphree (Holly). He was a proud grandfather and great-grandfather, always attending games, ski weekends, and school events. Therman also hosted Norwegian exchange student Rolf Steffenson, with whom he formed a lifelong friendship.
Faith was the cornerstone of Therman’s life. A dedicated follower of Christ, he actively participated in various Baptist churches as a member, teacher, and deacon.
Memorial Services
Therman is survived by his beloved wife, Jean; his children; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sisters Ruby Matthews and Uldean Cook, as well as brothers Don, Joe Wayne Jr., and Billy Charles Murphree. Surviving siblings include brother Rayburn Murphree (Dean) and several cherished family members.
The family extends special thanks to Aveanna Home Health and caregivers Judy Moran, Patsy Rice, and Dean Dyer for their compassionate care.
Visitation will be held on Monday, October 14, 2014, from 5-8 PM at Holly Pond Legacy Funeral Home. A Celebration Service will take place on Tuesday, October 15, at 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Holly Pond.
