Announcement of Death
The death has been announced of Dr. Richard I. Adams, age 87 years old, who passed away on September 30, 2024. He was residing in Plymouth, MN.
Biography
Born on 28 January 1937, Richard lived a life of dedication to family, to medicine, and to the many passions that filled his heart.He was preceded in death by his parents Kenneth and Mildred (Whiting) Adams, brothers Clifford, Jim, and Robert. Surviving are his brother Loren “John” Adams, sisters Ruth and Phyllis, many relatives, friends, neighbors, and his beloved dog Daisy.
He grew up on the farm before moving to Mankato, where he was the youngest of seven. Richard was top of his class everywhere-academically. Graduated from Mankato High School, Mankato State College, and University of Minnesota Medical School. Began to practice medicine in the Twin Cities and then into the US Army as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Loved Ones
The couple, Richard with his wife Phyllis, had two children whom he brought up in Minneapolis. Richard became his neighborhood kids’ favorite for his delightful sense of humor.
Hobbies
Projects inspired by PBS’s “This Old House” projects at his home in Colorado and Florida reminded him of the love of the farm. He and brother Loren shared working side by side for many hours. In retirement he divided his time between Minnesota and Florida, where he developed a real passion for flora and fauna. Many remember his infectious laughter: whether it be those seeing “The Carol Burnett Show” in the ’70s or sharing a chuckle over “M.A.S.H.” in the last months of his life as he battled Parkinson’s.
Memorial Services
A graveside service will be held at 1 PM on Friday, October 25, at Fort Snelling Cemetery. The family requests the kindness of your presence for his special day. Special thanks is given to his neurologist, the Minneapolis VA staff, and those at Mission Nursing Home and Interim HealthCare for such caring support.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his honor to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, the University of Minnesota Medical School, your local PBS stations, the National Park Foundation, or Parkinson’s organizations.
