Announcement of Death
In Loving Memory, we announce the passing of James “Jim” Melville Hibbard in October [insert date], due to complications from multiple myeloma. He peacefully departed surrounded by his loving family.
Biography
Jim Hibbard was born in Skowhegan on March 27, 1949, the beloved son of the late Derrill and Ruth (Gould) Hibbard. He grew up in Madison, where he enjoyed an active childhood, exploring the great outdoors. His early years included delivering newspapers before school, fishing for trout in the streams between Anson and Madison, and achieving distinction as an athlete, particularly in cross-country running. Jim graduated from Madison Memorial High School in 1967 and then attended the University of Maine – Farmington (UMF), where he played college baseball and earned a degree in Education, graduating with honors in 1971. His career in the paper industry spanned 34 years at SAPPI-Somerset Mill until his retirement in 2010.
Hobbies
Jim was a lifelong hunter and fisherman, instilling in his sons a deep appreciation for nature. He enjoyed golfing and swimming at Embden Pond, often having adventures in western Maine and central Maine’s wilderness with his longtime friend, Cliff Miller. Jim found great joy in solitary drives on dirt backroads, cherishing the peace that nature brought him. A devoted sports fan, he was happiest at Fenway Park or cheering on the Patriots, creating lasting friendships—even with Yankee fans he affectionately called “bums.” He loved traveling with his companion of twenty years, Nancy, to Myrtle Beach, Florida, Las Vegas, and around scenic Maine.
Loved Ones
Jim is survived by his wife of 11 years, Nancy; his sons Corey Hibbard and Tony Hibbard; stepdaughter Antonina Berube; and stepson David Deprey. He is also survived by his brothers, Chester and Bryan Hibbard, and uncle, Richard Gould. As a warm-hearted Grandpa, he leaves behind Lauren, Emma, Ella, Evelyn, and Grant Hibbard, who will carry on his legacy.
Memorial Services
A memorial celebration will take place shortly after the funeral, in which family and friends will meet to pay their tributes to Jim’s life and to reminisce. You may make a contribution in Jim’s name to a charity for the promotion of youth outdoor activities instead of flowers.
